The Centers for Disease Control recently recommended that people traveling to certain countries for the purpose of adopting children get vaccinated for Hepatitis A. Among the countries named in the recommendation are Guatemala, China, Russia and Ethiopia.
Dr. Cindy Weinbaum stated that recently, there have been 20 cases of U.S. family members becoming infected with the disease following an international adoption. The new regulations pertain to adoptions coming from high or intermediate infection risk, which is most of the world. Places excluded are North America, Western Europe, Australia, New Zealand and Japan.
