There is a growing movement to actually take aspects of divorce and family law into the 21st century! Imagine that!
Virtual visitation is not a new idea, but it is new to me. It’s one of those ideas that when you hear about it, you have a “I could have had a V-8″ moment. Basically, it is the use of internet technology, such as webcams, to help facilitate visitation between a non-custodial parent and their child. It is not meant to take the place of traditional visitation.
I could see the use of this, especially in cases where the non-custodial parent lives a great distance away, such as in another state, and the traditional “every other weekend” visitation is not practical. Virtual visitation, in my opinion, promote a closeness that is just not possible with telephone calls alone.
Presently, virtual visitation is “on the books” in four states: Utah, Texas, Florida, and Wisconsin. There are also efforts in a number of other states to enact it. You can see the state by state status here.
