I’ve written before concerning a guardian ad litem. This is, in my opinion, some of the hardest work I have ever done. It is a lot of pressure to have as your job deciding what is in the best interest of a child. Usually, this involves deciding which parent should have custody of the child.
Often, a parent loves their child very much, but due to circumstances beyond their control, they are unable to adequately care for their child. In those situations, a guardian ad litem will usually recommend, if their is a better alternative for custody, that the child be placed with that alternative.
When I am faced with that situation, I always feel some guilt. Even though I recommend what I honestly believe is in the child’s best interest, I feel as if I’m breaking up a family. I guess that’s part of the reason that lawyers have a high rate of depression as a profession.
