The Mabus Divorce Just Won’t Die

The New York Times ran a story today about Ray Mabus’s nasty divorce a few years back. For those who don’t know, he secretly taped conversations that his then-wife Julie had with a priest, and used those conversations against her in their divorce trial.

The People’s Law School

Sorry for the short notice on this, but I just found out myself.

The Jackson, MS Clarion Ledger reports that “The People’s Law School” will be held tomorrow, February 28, at my alma matter, Mississippi College School of Law.

The three-hour session will focus on women’s and children’s issues such as domestic violence, child support, divorce, and guardianships.

Simple, they’re all in this week’s divorce news. (This has nothing to do with Hattiesburg or south Mississippi, but it’s more interesting than anything happening here).

First, let’s travel to The Hills, or at least where those two attention-hungry individuals, Spencer Pratt and Heidi Montag are. It seems that the two weren’t happy simply having a fake wedding; they are reportedly now going to have a fake divorce. Why don’t these two get rid of their fake lives and get real ones?

Remember the “octuplet lady” who made news recently for that multiple birth? In case you haven’t heard, she had six children. It seems she was once married, and her (now) ex-husband longer spent more time trying to get a divorce than they spent married to each other. The details in this article are sketchy, but it seems at least some of the trouble getting the divorce was caused by problems serving her with process.

My final story involves Wall Street corruption, but perhaps not in the way you would expect. It seems that a New York couple had a nice sum of money invested with Bernie Madoff’s investment firm. In 2004, when they separated, their portfolio was worth much more than it is now. Apparently, the portfolio, or at least the majority of it, was awarded to the husband in the property settlement. Now, it has lost much of its value, and he thinks his ex-wife should bear some of the loss. You can check out the article in Reuters.
